Microsoft Office App and App Protection Policy

I had some problems this week when I enabled CA rule for Office 365 to require App Protection Policy. On iOS it worked with all enabled apps. But in Android, the Microsoft Office app did not work. I did quite a lot of t-shoot before I found the solution.

It turns out that the Microsoft Office app isn´t really the Microsoft Office app?

There are 3 different Microsoft Office apps in App Protection Policy to choose from:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Office [HL]
  • Microsoft Office [ROW]
Office Mobile App for iOS, Microsoft Office for iPad & iPhone

I assumed that Microsoft Office was the default available one in play store. But no, it´s not! It´s of course the HL or ROW one. In my case the Microsoft Office [ROW] was the one to use.

  • Microsoft Office [ROW] preinstalled on Samsung devices outside the US and China
  • Microsoft Office [HL] preinstalled on Samsung devices in the US
  • Microsoft Office – this one is available in China stores

Not so obvious? But now I know, and also you!
